President's Report Below is a final reminder for this Sunday’s
Picnic for Trees, a celebration of National Tree Day. It has been well
publicised with contributors like Michael Bianchino promoting the event
in the local newspapers and Graham Ross giving it a plug on his radio
program. If you can spare an hour this Sunday come down to the
Village Green and help with the planting of over 25 Lilly Pillies. In
the spirit of the event, Hornsby Council’s plant nursery have provided
free native plants. The formal part of the event will start at noon.
Picnic for Trees – This Sunday 29th July 2018 at the Beecroft Village Green – 11.30am to 1.30pm As
in previous years there will be a focus on greening our environment
with family in mind. We’ll fire up the BBQ and provide a sausage
sizzle. A gold coin donation would be welcome. There will be various
guest speakers including Graham and Linda Ross from the Garden
Clinic. Local community groups participating include Save Beecroft
Cheltenham Alliance, Rotary, the Beecroft and District Garden Club,
Byles Creek Valley Union and Beards On.
Hornsby Council is supplying more Lilly Pillies plus another advanced
native tree. They are also digging the holes for us. All we have
to do is fill them back in! We propose to extend the existing row
of Lilly Pillies further along Beecroft Road, eventually creating a
screen for the Village Green.

Successful Grant for Researching Beecroft History The
Beecroft Cheltenham History Group (a sub-committee of the Civic Trust)
is very excited to have received a grant as part of the Armistice
Centenary Grants Program. This is a one off grant to support projects
commemorating the end of World War I.
The History Group will use the grant to help publish the letters of
James Blackwood - a young Beecroft man. His family home ‘Maraba’ still
stands on Beecroft Road near Observatory Hill and close by to Blackwood
Nature Reserve. Based on his letters, the publication will tell of his
service, life and death and the impact of the death of many other young
service personnel on the communities of Beecroft and Cheltenham.
The History Group wishes to thank in particular our local Federal
member, Julian Lesser MP, for his support of its grant application.
Ahimsa and Marie Byles - Saturday 15th September and
Sunday 16th September 2018 Please
note in your diaries this weekend. Friends of Ahimsa, with the
support of the National Trust, are organising a special weekend at
Ahimsa. The former home of Marie Byles, Marie bequeathed Ahimsa to the
National Trust when she died. Marie Byles was a well- known local
identity. She purchased over a hectare of bushland at the end of Day and
Cobram Roads in Cheltenham and built her modest home within the
surrounding bushland. Besides being a keen conservationist, Marie was
the first female solicitor in NSW, working from her office in
Eastwood. September 2018 will be the 100 year anniversary of her
registration as a solicitor.
The Trust, in conjunction with other community groups, is supporting
this weekend activity. On the Saturday there will be a historical walk
through Beecroft and Cheltenham starting at 1pm at Marie’s
childhood home in Welham St Beecroft and finishing at Ahimsa in time for
the official opening by the Mayor at 3.30pm. On the Sunday the Trust
will conduct our regular Spring Walk departing Ahimsa at 2pm and
returning for afternoon tea at 4pm. More details of the event will be

Latest from the Police The
last remaining Neighbourhood Watch group in Beecroft Cheltenham has
folded. However, the BCCT has established an arrangement with the Ryde
Police Area Command where we will receive crime and police information.
This information will be included in our Website, eNews and on our
facebook page.
Below are a few details surrounding a recent incident in Beecroft:
Man charged with drug possession – Beecroft
About 3.05pm on Tuesday 3rd July 2018, Police were patrolling
Booth Park in Sutherland Road Beecroft. Police saw four people standing
under a small shelter within the park. Police approached the four
people and could see a number of small plastic resealable bags scattered
on the ground as well as a bong on a seat next to an 18-year-old man
from Beecroft. Police spoke with the four people before searching them.
Police located a large resealable bag containing 12 smaller sachets
containing what is believed to be Cannabis within each sachet.
Police issued the man with a Court Attendance Notice for Possess
Prohibited Drug. He will appear in Burwood Local Court at a later date.
All four people were issued with a direction to move on from the park.

Cheltenham Oval and the Northwest Rapid Transport
(NRT) update Construction
on the sporting facility is underway next to the oval. The noisewalls
that were around the rail service facility have now been finally
removed. There was some initial drama when the construction
fencing was erected too close to the playing surfaces. This was
quickly sorted with an urgent onsite meeting between the sporting clubs,
Hornsby Council and the NRT project manager. Part of the bushland
walking track through to Kirkham Street has been diverted during this
phase of the construction.
Beecroft Cheltenham Scout Group Beecroft Cheltenham Scouts are having a fertilizer and garden supply drive. CLICK HERE to view their brochure. Orders close on 12th August for delivery on Saturday 18th August.
The Beecroft
Scouts Group currently has Scouts, Cubs and, most recently,
Joeys. They are planning to commence a Venturer Unit early
next year thus providing activities for children
aged from 5 to 18 year, across all sections.

Hornsby Council’s July General Meeting On Wednesday 11th
July Hornsby Council approved a Mayoral minute for Council to adopt a
Tree Planting Program across the Shire. A number of community
groups, including the Trust, spoke in support of the motion. The Trust
however stressed to the Council that for this program to work , the
community must be involved from the beginning. The Trust offered
to assist Council with the implementation of the program.
In the June eNews, the Trust mentioned it was seeking a Mayoral meeting
to discuss the future use of the Church funds. At this stage the
meeting is likely to be held in September. The Trust is also
providing the opportunity for other local groups to attend the meeting
as well. The Trust recognises its role as representing the broader
community.
